Superman 2002
Well the big hurrah, signaling the end of our jet flying season is now history. Superman
2002 was as big as ever. We had a good time, but I have to admit this year was a bit strange (which started
off with the sign in town "Welcome Jet Pilots Elk Meet").
We've always
only made it for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but now allot of people are making it an entire week long event.
Friday was pretty well washed out, by a slow rain that seemed to just park over us, but by late afternoon
it started to clear out. This left only 2 days for much flying, and with almost 200 pilots, anxious to get
some stick time, the flight lines were packed. Add to the congestion, a ton of spectators in the startup area
and 3 hours total for demos mid Saturday, we did not get hardly any flight time at all, in 3 days. I most
enjoy seeing and learning what's new in the hobby at this show anyhow, so it wasn't that big of a loss.
One thing that can be seen in the last couple of years, is that the bar for top notch scale jets had most
certainly been raised. There were some very impressive craft there. There were also some odd birds, including
some R/C rocket powered plane, some trainer thing that pretty well shed it's covering on it's first flight,
and a very impressive 4 ducted fan Vampire. As ducted fans seem to be disappearing, it was interesting to see
one stop the show the first time it flew Saturday. As things were wrapping up Sunday, a very strange front
rolled through, thus the last few pictures below. Lastly, a shot of the crew of us from Columbia that made
it down.
