This was our first time, visiting Tim Riddelman's jet meet in Winamac Indiana, named Jets over the Heartland. We had a great time at this new (to us) show. The flying site has to be one of the best R/C model fields, I think I've ever seen....big paved runway, grass run-offs that are perfectly mated to the pavement, covered pavilion, taxi ways, heck, even blast shields and a 2 story control tower!
From what I heard, I think the pilot tally was around mid 80's, so there was plenty of flying time for all. I got in 8 flights on the trusty F-15, and Jerry officially became a 'jet weenie' as he took the sticks for the first time on his BVM Aggressor II. There was a good turnout of vendors, to poke around at when taking a break as well.
One common theme that struck us in hindsight was 'variety'. Sure, you would expect to see jets at a jet meet. But, by the time the weekend was done, we had seen at the event an utralight take off, several balloon departures, a Saturday night 'ballumination', a racing snowmobile (which we never did figure out how that fit in), and ending with quite a fireworks show that I think the entire town turned out for.
Oh, and I about forgot, there was the beer balancing event, as demonstrated by Ben Ndubuisi below. :-)
Pictured at the bottom are some shots at a museum we stopped at on the way back in Illinois, on a whim. It was the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum. Many of the planes were in poor repair, but it was an interesting stop none the less.
